 | Recreation and SportsRec·re·a·tion: Etymology: Middle English recreacion, from Anglo-French, from Latin recreation-, recreatio restoration to health, from recreare to create anew, restore, refresh, from re- + creare to create. Recreation restores, refreshes, and creates anew our bodies, minds, and spirits. Southwest Oklahomans love to recreate and demonstrate this through a huge variety of both indoor and outdoor activities. |

 | LawtonThe town of Lawton was founded August 6, 1901, when the last of the Indian lands in the Oklahoma Territory, the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache reservation, was opened by the federal government for settlement. In contrast to land runs used in other parts of the Territory, a lottery was established to distribute the land in 160-acre plots. A person wanting a claim had to register for the drawing. On July 10, 1901, registration opened at Fort Sill and at El Reno, Oklahoma. About 29,000 "wannabe" homesteaders from all over the United States journeyed into the southwest Oklahoma Territory to register at Fort Sill during the 16 days registration was open. Another 135,000 registered at El Reno. Lottery planners in Washington, D.C. had not foreseen so many people wanting land in that part of the country. The drawing began July 29th at El Reno, and only 6,500 were lucky enough to be selected for a homestead in each of three districts, one of which was Lawton.

 | AgricultureSouthwest Oklahoma isn't anything if it isn't agricultural. The fertile grassland and deep topsoil yielded itself readily to the settler's plow. At the turn of the 20th Century, much of Southwest Oklahoma was divided into "sections" equaling one square mile, containing 640 acres. Each section was further divided into "quarter sections", each holding 160 acres. Every person whose name was drawn in the lottery of 1901, received a "quarter" which became known as a "homestead". Those homesteads became farms that provided everything the farmer's family needed to live and exist. |

 | Medicine ParkMedicine Park is located at the main entry to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, the second most visited wildlife refuge in the country - hosting more than 1.5 million annual visitors. The community has a rich and colorful history. Originally founded on July 4th, 1908 by Oklahoma Senator Elmer Thomas, Medicine Park was Oklahoma’s first planned tourism resort. The pages of the Town’s colorful history are filled with the likes of Will Rogers, Wiley Post, Frank Phillips, Bob Wills, Al Capone, Bonnie and Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, Lil Hardin, Colonel Jack Abernathy, Les Brown, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and countless others. The Medicine Park “spirit” is a special blend of the Native American belief in the healing powers of the waters of Medicine Creek and the use of rounded cobblestones in almost all early-day structures. This construction material is unique in Oklahoma, and is found in only a few other places in the country. |
