The cultivation of trees is not widespread throughout Southwest Oklahoma. The soil and climate are not conducive to the type of trees normally considered as an industry. Cultivation today is going to be primarily pecan orchards, with Oklahoma ranking 5th in the U.S. in native pecan production. Following a distant second are peach and plum orchards. However, in the early 1900s, during the time of the Wichita Forest Reserve, numerous plantings were undertaken including, Osage orange, eastern red cedar, black walnut, mulberry trees, and honey locusts. Few of these plantations survived to exist today. The most notable is the Parallel Forest located on the Hwy. 115, the road to Meers, on the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.
