Apple and Pear20 viewsThis is the famous "Apple and Pear" landmark located on the western end of Elk Mountain located in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge of Southwest Oklahoma. Just below the "Apple and Pear" are some popular rock climbing routes. In the upper left corner can be seen a small part of a natural rock archway. This picture was taken from the "Valley of the Boulders", another popular spot for hikers. The "Valley of the boulders consists of huge boulders that have tumbled down the western slope of Elk Mountain into the valley below, piling on top of each other and creating large chambers underneath that are great fun for exploring.Sep 01, 2009
Throughout the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge interesting rock formations can be found. Wind and rain have carved and otherwise weathered so many granite boulders, that their number is limited only by your imagination. Much like identifying shapes and figures in the clouds, hiking in the Wichitas can be a contest to see how many different shapes and figures you can find!
