 | MeteorologyAnd GOD said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." So GOD made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. GOD called the expanse "sky." Genesis 1:6—8. |

| | | WinterA Southwest Oklahoma winter is hard to describe because you can't put it in a box. It's isn't unusual for winter day temperatures to reach lows in the teens with windchills below zero. Then again, it isn't unusual to have days with highs approaching 60 under clear blue skies. And both can happen in the same week! |

 | GeologyAnd GOD said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. GOD called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas". Genesis 1:9—10. |

| | | Wichita Mountains Wildlife RefugeLocated in Southwest Oklahoma, the 59,020 acre Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, established in 1901 by Theodore Roosevelt, is the oldest managed wildlife preserve in the United States. It is home to more than 50 mammal, 240 bird, 64 reptile and amphibian, 36 fish, and 806 plant species. It boasts the best technical hard rock climbing routes east of the Rocky Mountains. It's also a great way to spend the afternoon hiking, boulder hopping, and trying to find the many places and features written about in Charles Ellenbrook's book, "Outdoor and Trail Guide to the Wichita Mountains", and Alan Thode's, "Hiking the Wichitas". Both are available at the Visitor's Center and well worth the money spent! |

| | | GrassesBeing part of the Great Plains of North America, you expect to find an abundance of grasses, sedges, and rushes throughout Southwest Oklahoma. You aren't disappointed, because they are growing everywhere a deliberate effort has been made to prevent their growth, or to grow some other plant. Someone once said, we owe our existence, almost entirely, directly or indirectly, on the grasses. So often we take them for granted. |

| | | TreesToday, there are more trees growing in Southwest Oklahoma than ever before in history. This is because man has planted them. Southwest Oklahoma consists of two land types, the Red Bed Plains and the Gypsum Hills. Couple this with close proximity to the 100th Meridian, that has historically separated the Moist East from the Arrid West, and you have an environment that is not forest friendly. Most native, and naturally growing, trees are found in close proximity to creeks and rivers. I can't think think of a naturally occurring lake in the area, but there are many manmade lakes and ponds where trees may be found, as well. The mesquite tree grows well in the wild but is not a native tree. However, because we, humans, enjoy shade and the aesthetic beauty of trees, we have planted them just about wherever we have found they will grow. |

| | | Recreation and SportsRec·re·a·tion: Etymology: Middle English recreacion, from Anglo-French, from Latin recreation-, recreatio restoration to health, from recreare to create anew, restore, refresh, from re- + creare to create. Recreation restores, refreshes, and creates anew our bodies, minds, and spirits. Southwest Oklahomans love to recreate and demonstrate this through a huge variety of both indoor and outdoor activities. |
